Civil and Foundation Work for High Mast Poles

The foundation is the part of a high mast project that's invisible once complete — and the part most likely to cause problems years later if it's under-designed. Here's how we approach it.

Soil Testing

Every project starts with a soil bearing capacity (SBC) test at the actual pole location. Filled or reclaimed soil near ports and low-lying sites often needs a wider raft foundation or pile foundation instead of a standard isolated footing — skipping this test is one of the most common causes of foundation failure on high mast projects.

Foundation Design

RCC foundation design follows IS 456 for structural design and IS 875 for the wind load the pole will transfer into the foundation. Foundation size, depth, and reinforcement scale with pole height and the site's wind zone — a 40m port pole in a coastal wind zone needs a substantially larger foundation than a 12m pole inland.

Casting and Curing

Anchor bolt cages are set to template, concrete is cast, and cured for a minimum of 14–21 days before any load is applied — this curing period, not the pole erection, is usually what sets the project timeline.

Site-Specific Adjustments

High water table sites, made-up ground, and sites near existing underground utilities all require adjustments to the standard foundation design — we flag these during the soil test and site survey stage, before a quotation is finalized, to avoid cost surprises mid-project.

This varies by soil condition and pole height — poor soil bearing capacity can significantly increase foundation cost relative to the pole. We only finalize pricing after the soil test, rather than estimating foundation cost before knowing ground conditions.

Can you do foundation work only, for poles we're sourcing elsewhere?

Yes, though we'd need the pole manufacturer's base plate and anchor bolt drawing in advance to design a matching foundation.
